The Boston Red Sox are wrapping up Grapefruit League play today against the Atlanta Braves with Kutter Crawford making his final start before pitching the third game of the four-game series against the Mariners. Tomorrow they will take on the Texas Rangers with Garrett Whitlock making his sixth start of the spring, he is 2-0 with a 3.45 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP, and 16 strikeouts in 15.2 innings. The Red Sox announced two moves today as they are looking to finalize their roster ahead of their Opening series against the Seattle Mariners which will start on Thursday and will see Bryan Bello take the ball. The moves the Red Sox made are:

  • LHP Joely Rodriguez has made the Opening Day roster
  • 1B C.J. Cron has been released after opting out on Friday

Red Sox Moves By The Numbers

Joely Rodriguez

Rodriguez was signed on February 23rd to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training, he would appear in six games before today going 0-0 with a 2.57 ERA, a 1.71 WHIP, and nine strikeouts in seven innings. Last season with the Red Sox he appeared in 11 games with a 6.55 ERA, a 1.73 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts in 11 games. 

C.J. Cron 

Cron signed on March 3rd to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training and he would compete with Bobby Dalbec it appears Dalbec won that competition. Cron played in six games hitting .248 with a .729 OPS; he had one RBI, one run scored, and three walks. Last season he spent time with the Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Angels playing in 71 games and hitting .248 with a .729 OPS; he had 12 doubles, 12 home runs, 37 RBI, 38 runs scored, and 17 walks.
