New Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May has done some impressive work in the transfer portal. Sure, it would have been nice to get Johnell Davis, but it’s hard to complain about his six-man haul.

For starters, it features Vlad Goldin. The rankings are different but he’s generally viewed as a top-10 player in this transfer portal class. College basketball analyst Evan Miya has Goldin ranked ninth overall.

Michigan basketball has the top-ranked transfer class

The well-respected analyst also gives Michigan basketball the No. 1 class in college basketball right now. He’s got four Michigan players rated as five-star transfers, plus two others rated as four-star players.

Roddy Gayle is certainly an X-factor. But he seems underrated by most after scoring 13 ppg for Ohio State last season. He did that shooting 28 percent from 3-point range. I’d be very surprised if he shoots that poorly again. Not only was he dealing with a wrist injury, but Gayle shot better than 80 percent at the free throw line in his first two seasons, so he’s a good shooter.

If Gayle can improve the 3-point percentage to the mid-30s — he shot over 40 percent as a freshman — he could easily be an All-Big Ten player. He also averaged over three assists last season.

Beyond Goldin and Gayle, Danny Wolf, who hasn’t been announced officially yet, is another guy with high upside. He’s a talented shooter and can even attack off the dribble, which is impressive for a 7-footer. Sam Walters is one of the best spot-up shooters in college basketball, plus I love what Rubin Jones and Trey Donaldson bring.

Donaldson has to prove he can be a full-time starting point guard, while Jones has to prove his production will translate to the Big Ten, but May did work in the portal. Four of the six players have multiple years of eligibility. Goldin and Jones are big-time winners or have been so there’s plenty to like.

More roster news for Michigan

On3.com has Michigan basketball ranked third in its rankings. It regards all six commitments as four-star transfers. Michigan also has three incoming freshmen, plus what looks like three holdovers in Nimari Burnett, Jace Howard, and Will Tschetter.

Terrance Williams committed to USC.  Jace Howard hasn’t made an announcement one way or the other, but the transfer portal is closed so it seems like he will be back for one more season.

Regardless, the six transfers will determine if the Wolverines are an NCAA tournament team and right now, with one spot to fill, I’d take that bet.
