Tyson Fury calls Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight ‘fantastic’ for the sport of boxing

In the two weeks since Jake Paul (9-1) announced he would be fighting boxing legend Mike Tyson (50-6-2) later this summer, many have been outspoken with their objections to the bout.

But one who’s actually in favor of the fight is reigning WBC and former WBA, WBO, IBF, IBO and The Ring heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

“I think it’s fantastic for boxing,” Fury said on “The Stomping Ground.” “…I think it’s a really good spectacle for boxing — brings a lot of people to the game. Listen, who am I to say, ‘Oh, Mike Tyson shouldn’t be boxing,’ or ‘Jake Paul shouldn’t be boxing?’ Good luck to them. They’re both going to make what I call a [expletive] ton of money out of it.”

The 30-year age gap between the two fighters coupled with the fact that Paul is an active pro boxer who’s fought 10 times over the last three-plus years while Tyson hasn’t competed professionally since a sixth-round retirement to Kevin McBride in 2005 has prompted many to call the mid-summer bout nothing more than a publicity stunt.

Tyson’s last competitive boxing match was an exhibition bout against former WBA, WBC, IBF, IBO, WBF and IBA light heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. (66-10) in November 2020. It ended in an eight-round draw, and many believed the fight showed Tyson wasn’t the same fighter he was in his heyday.

Conversely, Paul fought as recently as March 2 — a first-round TKO win over Ryan Bourland — and he had three fights in 2023, winning two of them.

“OK, (Tyson is) 57 years old, but he’s a former undisputed world heavyweight king, and (Paul) plays computers for a living, and he’s come to boxing about a year ago, so pretty even match,” Fury continued. “… People say, ‘Oh, it’s [expletive]’ this, that and the other. But I’ll bet they still watch it. Who’s not intrigued?”

Paul and Tyson will square off July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas and will be streamed on Netflix.
